Personalities | Jonathan Dove | Contemporary | Classical

b. 1959
English composer

The UK’s most widely performed opera composer, Dove began his career working as an arranger, repetiteur and chorus master, including at Glyndebourne, which commissioned his first full-length opera, Flight (1998). The chamber opera Tobias and the Angel (1999), like many of his works, involves parts for children and amateurs, while The Enchanted Pig (2006) and The Adventures of Pinocchio (2007) have attracted young audiences, the latter receiving on average one production a year since its first (by Opera North). Dove’s sympathetic vocal writing is evident also in his song cycles and choral music (both secular and liturgical), while his dramatic instincts remain to the fore in instrumental works such as the concertos Stargazer (2001, for trombone) and The Magic Flute Dances (1999).
