(Vocal/instrumental group, 1966–74)

On breaking free of the Scottish folk circuit, singing multi-instrumentalists Robin Williamson and Mike Heron charmed a wider world with homespun modal harmonies and exotic Gaelic mysticism that reconciled the pibroch with the sitar. They peaked commercially in 1968 with The Hangman’s Beautiful Daughter in the UK album Top 10. Later output relied more on instrumentation less quaint to rock consumers, but the long chromatic melodies and harmonic daredevilry remained intriguing and influential on Led Zeppelin and others.
