(Vocal group, 1978–present)

Formed at Leeds University by Jon Langford (drums – later guitar, vocals) and Tom Greenhalgh (guitar) with Andy Carrigan (vocals), Mark Lycett (vocals) and Ross Allen (bass), The Mekons’ enthusiastic amateurism typified the do-it-yourself punk ideal. Their 1978 debut single, ‘Never Been In A Riot’, was hailed as a classic. The band went on hold after The Quality Of Mercy Is Not Strnen (1979). Reconvening in the mid-1980s, they embraced folk and country influences.
