Personalities | 50 Cent | Twenty-First Century | Rock

(Rapper, b. 1975)

Curtis James Jackson II was born in New York, and has come to symbolize a brand of rap/actor that somehow manages to place circumstance over actual style. 50 Cent’s main claim to infamy is the fact he has been shot numerous times. Understandably brash in his delivery, his thuggish attitude towards many aspects of life, a psychiatrist might add, is a self-defence mechanism.

Either way, after writing for Run DMC in the mid-1990s, 50 Cent found himself without a deal until Eminem and Dr. Dre signed him to their label/publishing company, after hearing him on mixtapes. He is now six albums into his career, the best of which is Get Rich Or Die Tryin’ (2003), which also titled a film of his life. Produced by Dre, it featured the blunt, syncopated chart hit ‘In Da Club’ (co-produced by Eminem), a Billboard single of the year.
