American conductor
Born in Budapest, he grew up in Vienna, showing prodigious talent as a pianist and composer. After taking up conducting, he met Richard Strauss, who helped to promote his career. At the outbreak of World War II Szell settled in the US, where he became music director of the Cleveland Orchestra, holding the post until his death. With a reputation for ruthless orchestral discipline, he established it as one of the world’s greatest orchestras.
