Personalities | Giuseppe Adami | Turn of the Century | Opera
1878–1946, Italian
Adami worked as a playwright and journalist as well as a librettist. He found most success with lighter plays such as Una capanna e il tuo cuore (1913) and also wrote a number of ballet scenarios. His is best known operatically for his collaborations with Puccini. The publisher Giulio Ricordi brought the two together, and their first project was La rondine, an operetta commissioned by the directors of the Karltheater. The work was not a great success but Puccini felt encouraged enough to continue using Adami for Il tabarro and Turandot, which Adami completed in collaboration with Renato Simoni. Adami retained his link with the Ricordi house, acting as their publicist, as well as writing music criticism for two Italian journals.
