Galway studied in London and Paris before becoming an orchestral player, first in England, then with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra 1969–75. Since leaving Berlin he has been active as a soloist. He has enlarged the flute repertory by adapting works written for other instruments, and several composers have written pieces for him.
