Born in Russia, Heifetz studied in St Petersburg. He made his Berlin debut in 1912, and his New York debut in 1917. As well as performing the standard repertory he commissioned new works, including the Walton Violin Concerto. His powerful tone was combined with a technique of almost nonchalant precision and brilliance. From 1962 he taught in Los Angeles.
