Lang Lang entered the Beijing Central Conservatory at the age of 10, later continuing his studies in the US. He made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2001, and went on to become the first Chinese pianist to appear with the Vienna Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic. By the time of his appearance at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, he had achieved, in China especially, a level of celebrity almost unparalleled for a classical musician. In 2009 he was named one of Time magazine’s top 100 influential people.
