La Carrera Panamericana

‘As far as Pink Floyd was concerned the 1990s nearly didn’t happen,’ wrote Nick Mason in his autobiography Inside Out. This was not due to legal feuding but that Dave Gilmour and manager Steve O’Rourke were nearly killed when racing in the Carrera Panamericana along the length of Mexico. Their C-type Jaguar had gone over the edge of a cliff at 130 kph (80 mph) and although Gilmour escaped with cuts and bruises, O’Rourke suffered a fractured leg. Nick Mason, who had participated in the race with O’Rourke two years earlier, went on to finish in the first 10 in his own C-type Jag. A film of the race, La Carrera Panamericana, was released in 1992 with a soundtrack entirely by Pink Floyd.
