Personalities | Renée Fleming | Modern Era | Opera

b. 1959, American

Fleming has taken a position in the American public consciousness similar to that of Beverley Sills in the twentieth century – a household name even to many people who are unfamiliar with opera as an art form. Much-loved for her radiant tone and expansive on-stage presence, the full lyric soprano’s repertoire encompasses Richard Strauss, Mozart, bel canto, French opera, and also operetta, musical theatre and jazz. She is also a champion of contemporary music, with acclaimed premieres including the role of Blanche Dubois in André Previn’s opera A Streetcar Named Desire. More recently, she has integrated artistic direction and curation into her eclectic career.
