Sammi Smith will forever be remembered for her 1971 chart-topping version of Kris Kristofferson’s ‘Help Me Make It Through The Night’, which also made the US pop Top 10. Her one and only No. 1 highlighted her worth as a song interpreter, and choice covers of Steve Goodman’s ‘City Of New Orleans’ (1973) ‘Today I Started Loving You Again’ (1975) and ‘I Can’t Stop Loving You’ (1977) were among her finest work.
