(Vocals, b. 1940)

A pioneer of soul music, Burke is as a Philadelphia gospel preacher who fused country and western, rock’n’roll, and rhythm and blues to preach through song. He had a string of hits on Atlantic throughout the 1960s, including ‘Got To Get You Off My Mind’ and ‘Everybody Needs Somebody To Love’ (covered by The Rolling Stones), although he never charted in the UK. Now hailed as an uncompromising elder statesman of soul, he still records and preaches.
