Jamesetta Hawkins was born in Los Angeles, California. She moved to the San Francisco area, where she was discovered by Johnny Otis. She made her recording debut at the age of 16 for Modern, and had a number-one R&B hit with her first record, ‘The Wallflower’ (a.k.a. ‘Roll With Me Henry’). She worked in rock’n’roll package tours throughout the 1950s before signing with Chess Records in 1960 and scoring another big record with ‘At Last’. A versatile performer, Etta James can deliver the goods on low-down blues, rockers and tender ballads, and won a blues Grammy in 2005.
