Personalities | Volker Kriegel | Seventies | Jazz & Blues
(Electric guitar, 1943–2003)
As a sociology student in Frankfurt, Germany, Kriegel’s playing caught the ears of older musicians, who convinced him to pursue music. After working with visiting US players he joined the nascent Dave Pike Set in 1968. Kriegel’s Spectrum (1971) was an important step in the development of European jazz rock. In 1973, he formed Spectrum with bassist Eberhard Weber, and in 1976 co-founded the long-running United Jazz and Rock Ensemble.
