Personalities | Neil Young | Seventies | Rock

(Guitar, vocals, b. 1945)

This highly respected Canadian musician first came to prominence in 1967 as a member of Buffalo Springfield. Young’s solo career began in 1969 with Neil Young. For his next album, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere (1969), he recruited Danny Whitten (guitar), Billy Talbot (bass) and Ralph Molina (drums), collectively known as Crazy Horse. Shortly afterwards, Young joined Crosby, Stills and Nash for an album and tour.

1972’s country-tinged ‘solo’ album Harvest was a huge seller, but darkness engulfed Young’s work following the sacking and subsequent death by overdose of Whitten, as reflected in Time Fades Away (1973), On The Beach (1974) and Tonight’s The Night (1975, recorded in 1973). His next album Zuma (1975) featured one of Young’s most celebrated songs, ‘Cortez The Killer’. 1978’s Rust Never Sleeps represented a positive reaction to punk, befitting an artist who has never allowed himself to become complacent.
